Hey #stopbridenstine folks: WRT " Bridenstine is not a scientist" Last time #NASA had an actual "scientist" as Administrator was James Fletcher 1986-89 (PhD in physics) For the past 29 yrs @NASA Administrators have been astronauts, engineers, & management experts. No "scientists"pic.twitter.com/cGotTehXUM

That is not why people are saying it.

OK then explain "why people are saying it."

We all know that Jim's nomination has been contentious because of his background, his voting history and political views-not that he isn't a scientist. They are using that hashtag because they are worried about the agency, not his ability to do proofs.

I'm sure he will do a fine job, but it's important to recognize why people are concerned and his education is not the reason.

I kinda disagree. People tend to say what they mean, esp. in full-throated criticism. A lot of people are criticizing Bridenstine's lack of scientific credentials -- that's indisputable. Doesn't mean that's the only relevant or most important criticism being made, but it's there.

All I can say is that after a year of watching and listening to criticism of Jim it was always a variant on not being a scientist and/or being a politician as being disqualifiers. Statements like "NASA has always been run by a scientist" abound.

Keith, the criticism was more questioning whether he accepted the scientific process and the results thereof, namely of climate change. That’s a fair criticism.

Ken go do a read through of the tweets that have been posted since last year about Bridenstine. They say what they say. We're all reading too much into them IMHO. As Lee said people outside our little news bubble tend to say what they think - and what they mean.

The Twitterverse is not a reflection of reality. It’s its own bubble — bigger, but even more distorted (by bots, among other things) than the news bubble.

I guess? That's certainly what most thoughtful critics were saying. Are those the only ones that matter, though? Because most of the stuff I've seen on social media was more in the rote vein of "he's not a scientist and he's a Republican/Trump appointee, so he's terrible."

It feels really disingenuous to me to basically say that all those "he's not a scientist" criticisms shouldn't be taken at face value when it's pretty clear (to me, anyway) that said critics meant them to be taken that way.
