Could Orion take astronauts to Mars? Technically, yes. But they'll be dead in 20 days when life support runs out. Which is non-optimal.

@Rand_Simberg@RocketAcademy Hey, it's your book that says we should stop obsessing over not killing people.2 replies 1 retweet 1 like -

@kchangnyt That's different than sending them on a suicide mission. They'd be guaranteed dead three weeks from earth.@RocketAcademy2 replies 2 retweets 0 likes -

Point of the book is that we have to rationally match risk/cost to reward, not deliberately slam folks into Mars.

@kchangnyt Orion is $9B to duplicate Apollo. DARPA XS-1 is $140M to revolutionize space transport. Why is media so impressed with Orion?2 replies 12 retweets 7 likes -

@RocketAcademy@Rocketeer_UK I love DARPA as much as the next person, but XS-1 is an unmanned suborbital spaceplane that is a paper design.2 replies 0 retweets 0 likes
@RocketAcademy @Rocketeer_UK When XS-1 launches, media will love it, too. We like pretty things we can see.
