We're used to meteorologists using weather maps to warn us about a Hurricane, like a Grade 5, in a specific region. This graph portends a Hurricane 6 (which we have never experienced) throughout the United States. And I'm an optimist.pic.twitter.com/4BRnjrk06n

The problem with this graph is population size. Italy has more than 50 deaths for every million citizens. We have less than one.

That's incorrect. Please read threads from @jburnmurdoch and @kchangnyt Avoid confirmation basis

Per capita numbers would be much more relevant.

No, they would not. That's not how pandemics work. Population size becomes relevant when a sizable fraction of people are infected (or dead). Then the virus is starting to run out of "food" — uninfected people to spread to. In both Italy and US, <<1% infected so far.

Aren't they also useful for measuring the stress on health-care systems? X infections in the US or China is not as concentrated as X in Italy.

Disagree. 778/million people in Italy is very different than the 58/million in the US (data as of March 20). Population size correlates with size of health system that would have to absorb the influx of sick patients.
