I meant it in the context of using ergodic theory (dynamical system ideas) in the study of other areas of math like group theory, number theory, etc. Which was Labourie's point and what he said and what I quoted him saying.

even with that specification (which you have to admit is not clear in the published text) it's historically just plain wrong. the article I linked to in the tweet you just replied to gives the relevant background dating in part to Poincaré and in part to the 1930s
