This technique is essentially a geometric interpretation of completing the square.

Sort of, but a bit more than that. It's completely equivalent since it produces the same answers to the same problem. But most people don't grasp completing the square.

yeah, memorizing the quadratic formula is a lot easier than memorizing how to complete the square (or figuring it out every time) for most people.

I think I’ve figured out what I meant to say. In your method, you create a new variable z, you’re essentially changing your coordinates to the center of the parabola to make the problem a lot simpler!
