This technique is essentially a geometric interpretation of completing the square.
Sort of, but a bit more than that. It's completely equivalent since it produces the same answers to the same problem. But most people don't grasp completing the square. @PoShenLoh explains in a lot more detail here: https://www.poshenloh.com/quadratic/

yeah, memorizing the quadratic formula is a lot easier than memorizing how to complete the square (or figuring it out every time) for most people.
