I usually remember the equation and when I don’t derive it from first principal (fast as I basically know equation). Multiple ways fine but I wasn’t clear why this way much easier overall.

I personally never remember what "completing the square" means, so I have to look that up. For me, at least, this approach provides a clearer, faster derivation. It seems that not-top math students also find it easier to understand.

The quadratic formula, which I haven't actually used in 30 years, is one of those things embedded forever in my neurons for some reason. As I totter to senility, it and the Oscar Meyer Weiner song will be the last two things left
