Happy Birthday to NASA's Space Launch System rocket, which was born on this day nine years ago. Its original authorizing language said the rocket should be ready for launch at the end of 2016. https://www.nasa.gov/pdf/649377main_PL_111-267.pdf …

A few people tried to stop it. Gabby Giffords, who would be shot a year later, warned her House colleagues that NASA engineers hadn’t designed the SLS. The Senate had: “This is a bad bill, this will do damage to NASA and should be voted down."https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2010/09/nasas-senate-bill-passes-dramatic-debate-vote-congress/ …

Replying to @SciGuySpace
Now that is something I didn't know. Given her husband's identity, it's a bit of a surprise. Now I'm curious as to how Kelly would approach the issue as a Senator should he win next year...

Gabby was pro-Constellation. She was anti-SLS not so much that NASA was in charge of building it, but there it had no underlying purpose. In that respect, she was right. If SLS was ready in 2016, what could NASA have done with it? Nothing.
