The IAU screwed up their planet definition 13 years ago today, but we've learned that dwarf planets like Pluto are full-fledged planets, &, numbering over 120, the most common type of planet, ahead of giants & terrestrials. @AlanStern @DrPhiltill @carolynporco @plutokiller
Eris had been discovered. What were you going to tell people? "We don't know how many planets there are or even what a planet is. We'll get back to you in a decade."

In the late 90s, early 2000s (Marsden attempting to give Pluto a minor planet #, the AMNH leaving out Pluto in its exhibit), I never once heard anyone say, "We should make a Ceres a planet again. We got that one wrong."

How many beetle species are still undiscovered? How does the brain work? Why do we need to tell children that we already know the answers? Why do you feel that planets need to be treated differently than anything else in nature? (I mean seriously, examine the assumptions.)/1

2/ I’ve spent a lot of time wondering this exact issue. Why do people feel attached to the idea that all the sun’s “planets” must already be known? Why do they “need” planets to form a simplistic and organized set instead of the wonderfully chaotic and vast set we see in reality?
