If you thought 8 ÷ 2(2+2) = ? was stupid and pointless, so did a lot of mathematicians.https://nyti.ms/2YKDk9f

It is stupid and pointless. There's the only one answer and it is 1. You always have to count brackets at first. That's the law. Wanna check - take it as a fraction. 8/2(2+2) No matter what you do, you will get only 1.

I mean fraction. In fraction 8 will go up and 2(2+2) will go down. If you will divide 8&2 by math laws in fraction, you will get 4 upside and 1(2+2) downside. Then whatever you do downside, you'll get 4. The fraction will be 4/4 and it is 1. Answer 16 is mistake.

That is only if the question was written as 8/(2(2+2)) It was not, so the only answer is 16.

If you write it as 8 ------- 2(2+2) you also get 1.

Yes. But it wasn't written that way. People aren't getting this wrong due to confusion of division symbols and fractions. I see way more people getting it wrong because they think that division comes before multiplication. That is not a matter of ambiguity.

Replying to @ZombieTreeFrog @kchangnyt and
I agree that it's poorly written, but as written, there is only one correct answer, even if it's not immediately clear.
