So the equation should read 8/2*(2+2) Order of operations Parentheses goes first (2+2) 8 / 2 * 4 The left to right 8/2 4*4 Then the implicit multiplication of 4*4 = 16 It’s the implicit multiplication that’s screwing most people up.
Or you can interpret everything after the ÷ as a single algebraic factor that should be calculated first. It doesn’t matter. It means someone used lousy notation.

A division sign is used the same way as a multiplication sign. No one would interpret 5×3+4 as 5×(3+4)
