There is no ambiguity even in the way it is written ...at least I had none in my mind based on rules taught in school Of course the whole purpose of this was to create ambiguity using a rules that are usually not needed due to clearer notation
People learn different rules in different places, and the rules are ambiguous. The P in PEMDAS says eliminate the parentheses, which, not unreasonably, some people interpret as multiplying out the 2(4).
