I don’t know how people expect me to respond when they say they would love to read my column, but the @nytimes has a fire wall and wants them to subscribe. I will never tell you what to do with your money. But, journalism is a profession like any other. Do you work for free?

We would prefer it remain advertising supported content. Paywall is not their only source of revenue. They also serve the content up for free for organic search results (Google traffic makes $$$ for ads) but same content is blocked when navigated to directly.
Paywall is not the only source of revenue, but it is the largest source. Advertising has gone to Google and Facebook, and subscribers are the only economically viable business model for The Times. Look to what happened to all of the other newspapers that slashed their newsrooms.
