I don’t know how people expect me to respond when they say they would love to read my column, but the @nytimes has a fire wall and wants them to subscribe. I will never tell you what to do with your money. But, journalism is a profession like any other. Do you work for free?

But your employer already pays you, so the paywall is not about you. And your employer is paid by the advertisers... So the paywall is like the banks ATM fees - just because they can do that.
The reason that the Times can afford to pay Charles (and me) is revenue from subscribers. Advertising has largely gone to Google and Facebook and is not coming back.
