Goro Shimura did not prove Fermat’s Last Theorem. But without his work, the theorem might still be a conjecture.https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/13/obituaries/goro-shimura-dead.html …

Shimura, on being informed Wiles had proven the Taniyama-Shimura Conjecture: "I told you so."

That's from the BBC documentary. I watched that and couldn't figure out with confidence what Shimura meant since we don't hear the interviewer asking the question or following up.

"He wrote almost all of his mathematical papers alone. Dr. Sarnak of Princeton recalled visiting Dr. Shimura's house and seeing two desks in his office".

"Dr. Shimura later expanded his work, and mathematicians now routinely talk about “Shimura varieties,” a fundamental concept in that area of mathematics".

I have read Fermat's Last Theorem in 2000, a book i was given by a math professor while i was in a New Year's Eve trip with family and friends in Fortaleza, CE, Brazil. It's a fascinating book. Met 2 beautiful brunet sisters too!!! My old first surf bord was with me then!!!😎
