Could also be pockets of water at high temperature and pressure combined with carbon-containing rock which doesn’t need to have a biological origin. I’d bet 50/50.

Yes, article says non-biological hydrothermal reactions is a plausible explanation. But that too would be fascinating and be exactly an environment where life thrives on Earth.
