Mars supposedly has a molten core and a mantle, just like earth. I don’t know exactly how NASA determined that but that was a few years back. My understanding was that methane was made geologically in the mantle.
How would methane get from the mantle to the surface if there aren't currently erupting volcanoes on Mars? That would be fascinating science too.

Faults in the crust, probably. They same way oil and gas migrated even without volcanic activity throughout a big part of the US and Canada.
