In a speech just now, Mike Pence proposed sending astronauts back to the Moon within five years. Just as a reminder, here’s the NASA budget over time. Current projections for 2018/2019/2020 are small fluctuations on the 2017 point. See if you can spot the Apollo years.pic.twitter.com/sLwdEjhdJg

Bar graph or NASA budget as a percentage of the federal budget. There’s a large spike centered on about 1966 where it gets to around 4.5%. After that, it drops to about 1% and since 2006 or so it’s been around 0.5%. The last year shown here is 2017.

TBH, I find that plot deceptive. The federal budget grew massively right after the end of Apollo. In absolute, inflation-adjusted terms, the Apollo peak doesn't look so big. http://www.planetary.org/blogs/casey-dreier/2019/0215-fy2019-nasa-gets-its-best-budget-in-decades.html …pic.twitter.com/GJ6Y9iia36

It looks a heck of a lot bigger than the current budget!

So? Much of that was for Saturn V and facilities and so forth that either still exist or have existing replacements. We can go to the Moon cheaply. Just not with SLS.

I’d love to see a workable detailed plan drawn up as to how. The fact that successive administrations have trotted out this promise with zero follow-through for the last couple decades had made me something of a cynic in this regard.

We all are justifiably cynics. It is nonetheless refreshing to hear that contractors who have long had contracts will be held to account, and cheaper solutions will be sought. Funding is one question. Congressional push back another.

I’ll wait to see the actual plan, progress, and budget before I’ll take anything said by this administration seriously.

It still amazes me that there was no hint of this in the presidential budget request two weeks ago. SLS+Gateway+lunar landing in 5 years within a flat budget (no one has asked for more money yet). Something has to give.

Well, if they cancel all the other inappropriately science based programs then the space flight budget may not be flat... (stupid anti science stance)

Not likely. The Democrats control the House, and in the Senate, Shelby and the Democratic ranking member have agreed to support all of NASA.
