This year's winner of the Abel Prize, math's equivalent of the Nobel, is Karen Uhlenbeck. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/19/science/karen-uhlenbeck-abel-prize.html …

Hi Kenneth, Karen is an amazing mathematician... which is obvious. While she's held many awards and certificates and is often labeled "The first woman", the fact is that her work is so incredible on so many levels that calling out her gender is quite sad. Please write something..

Seriously? Through much of her career, Karen Uhlenbeck was told she should not do math. Not because she was stupid, not because she was bad at math, but because she was a woman…

…and now that she has received what is arguably the highest honor in the field, we're not supposed to note that she is indeed the first woman to be so honored?

Guess what the title of the news release from the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters was: KAREN UHLENBECK FIRST WOMAN TO WIN THE ABEL PRIZE

I see your point, but her accomplishment was that she was absolutely brilliant and is one of the brightest minds in mathematics in the world in the last hundred years. Her gender is as relevant as her nationality. I actually am far more impressed...

that she managed to get this award without being a fellow at Chambridge. She doesn’t appear as unique as Ramanujan, but her methods and work especially in series is worthy of comparison to Euler or Ramanujan. And most importantly, its association...

to number theory and abstract algebra was ground shaking. It would be nice to note somewhere that she was the first woman to win it, but compared to what she accomplished, that’s barely relevant. I read your whole article trying to figure out what she won it for.. and failed...

That’s why I think there should be an article explaining her accomplishments. This isn’t an issue of PC or SJW... when a person spends decades working that hard to do such amazing things and the article doesn’t even mention them... that kinda sucks

What I can do for the general reader is just the broadest brushstrokes — soap bubbles in high-dimensional curved spaces, putting gauge theory used in quantum field theory on a solid footing.

Quanta has a good, more technical explanation: https://www.quantamagazine.org/karen-uhlenbeck-uniter-of-geometry-and-analysis-wins-abel-prize-20190319/ … If you want the full math, read Simon Donaldson's tribute to her: https://www.ams.org/journals/notices/201903/rnoti-p303.pdf …

Thanks for the links! That was certainly a much better article. :) I’ll save the math for after a few semesters on number theory :)
