Seriously? Through much of her career, Karen Uhlenbeck was told she should not do math. Not because she was stupid, not because she was bad at math, but because she was a woman…
…and now that she has received what is arguably the highest honor in the field, we're not supposed to note that she is indeed the first woman to be so honored?

I see your point, but her accomplishment was that she was absolutely brilliant and is one of the brightest minds in mathematics in the world in the last hundred years. Her gender is as relevant as her nationality. I actually am far more impressed...
