There's nothing in defn of meteor that says it doesn't impact: A small body of matter from outer space that enters the earth's atmosphere, becoming incandescent as a result of friction and appearing as a streak of light.

No, the part that survives the impact is called a meteorite. Of course, most of the impactor is vaporized. I've never seen anyone say the dinosaurs died out because of a meteorite impact.
