@kchangnyt not sure if i missed something but Mars is c. 33 million miles away, so why did insite go "over 300 million miles"?
It's like how you (and everyone else on Earth) have traveled 300 million miles in the past 6 months. (That's half an orbit, Earth is 93 million miles from sun, distance along half a circle is pi*r. Using rounded numbers: 3*100 million = 300 million)

Mars is farther from the sun, so it's moving slower and hasn't gone as far along its orbit. But InSight had to spiral outward to get there.
