King County is building a new youth detention center in Seattle.
There is a group of people who want the building stopped. They've filed a lawsuit. They've chained themselves to the construction site fence.
Attorney and activist @NikkitaOliver is part of that group. #KUOWrecord

Best Starts for Kids is 400M over 6 years. That’s comes out to 66M per a year for 6 years. By comparison the County spends 291M in 2017/18 on Adult and Juvenile Detention plus 233M on a new children’s jail. By comparison the County spends 346M in 2017/18 for the Sheriff’s office

The County allocates significantly more money to agencies prosecuting and incarcerating—primarily POC—than it allocates to BSK, Community Service Providers, Employment and Education Resources, Housing and Community Development, and Mental Health and Drug Dependency Funds.
-
Basically in 2017/18 the County will spend 638M on jails, courts and police and 243M (including BSK) on services and alternatives. The County is spend 60% more on preserving the punitive system than on building one that gets us towards zero use of detention.

Hi, over what period of time is that $400M going to this program? I’ve heard 6 years, is that true? More importantly: why can’t that $200M+ go to the program now instead of the youth jail?

This made me horny.

@kcexec Don’t change the subject—WHY is the new youth jail the best solution, where/what is your argument??? -
That's not changing the subject: It's pointing out that King County does indeed invest in many effective strategies that help children & youth thrive. It's all right here in his extensive interview with
