Before any ballot is counted, the law requires that we visually compare the signature on every returned ballot envelope with the voter’s signature on file.
Trained specialists look for general similarities such as height and spacing of letters or slants. They have an image file on the computer of the signature you placed when you registered.
Forget your signature from when you registered to vote? Your Driver's License signature can be a good guide, as they pull from DOL too.
Our specialists are trained by the Washington State Patrol in signature verification. Additionally, the signature must be verified before the envelope is opened and the ballot removed (so, no, we don’t know how you voted).
We also have observers onsite from both major political parties. Those observers coordinated through the parties themselves. The public can watch us at work on our webcams too:https://bit.ly/2HmMYfw
