Yesterday’s shooting, which occurred at one of the busiest corners in our region, has shaken our community. I want to extend gratitude to the many civil servants who worked quickly and bravely to keep us all safe.

King County employees displayed laudable courage and exemplary customer service, including but by no means limited the Transit Control Center who scrambled to adjust routes, Transit Police who responded on scene...

...Public Health employees who helped keep clients safe, bus drivers who displayed tremendous calm amid the storm, & Water Taxi crews who quickly added extra runs to get people home safely.

Gun violence is not isolated and it does not discriminate; it touches us all. We will continue to work with our partners in law enforcement, the King County Sheriff’s Office, the City of Seattle, and Sound Transit to tackle security challenges downtown and elsewhere.

While we must focus on identifying and confronting the root causes of violence in our community, we have the right to expect the streets to be safe, and that prolific offenders are dealt with seriously.
