Our country’s first #VeteransDay, then called Armistice Day, took place on November 11, 1919, to mark the end of the Great War one year earlier. It was later declared by Congress a day set aside by a grateful nation to honor and recognize the brave veterans of that war.

King County is home to more than 94,000 veterans of all ages. Included in that number are 1,247 people who work beside us every day at King County – employees in every department & branch of county government who are veterans or members of the National Guard and National Reserve.

90 County employees have recorded military service hours (active duty or reserves) this year. We had the opportunity to acknowledge many of those employees at a special award ceremony held November 8, and I thank each of them for their ongoing service.

Just as important as thanking our veterans is honoring their service through our actions. For the third time, the voters of King County took action to approve and expand the Veterans, Seniors and Human Services Levy.

In doing so, voters helped create funding for our King County Veterans Program and the incredible work they do to help local veterans, returning service members and their families connect to housing, job training, counseling, and other supports to successfully transition home.
