I'm all for that (and so is my 4-year old, who looooves purple electric buses). I also get the logistical hurdles in bringing spare capacity online. That said, there's also slack in the system. Cities around the world make transit free on days like this. Surely we can too.
Can’t speak for transit agencies in other countries, but to maintain an efficient system, we deploy nearly every vehicle we have at all times, regardless of their color. We also have the fastest-growing ridership in the U.S.
