No offense guys, but you’re testing a feature that nobody with a brain would want. Who wants better auto generated thumbnails over custom ones...

I know it seems irrational. But you'll be surprised at the number of smaller/newwr creators who end up using auto generated thumbnails. Some don't have the time, nor resources to create custom thumbnails. If the system can make it easier for those creators, then that's good.

You can create a custom thumbnail in paint for God’s sake. If you have the resources to edit a video, you have the resources to make a custom thumbnail.

You are right. It seems like an easy enough thing to do. But I have heard several creators who simply don't have the time today to invest in creating a creative/interesting thumbnail and a better auto generated one will come in handy. It's just different use cases.

Well, I know from personal experience. Maybe it’s easier for me, because I just use stills from videos, but surely they can make one in the time it takes to export a video.

Again, it's about providing solutions for diverse use cases. I know people who can whip out thumbnails in 15mins and then those that take over an hour to get it right. It's really about where you are in your creative story and how important all the different elements are to you.

My issue, as a viewer, is that I prefer to be able to see custom thumbnails. It helps me to identify videos very quickly. I would prefer if YT gave us the option of opting out of this experiment because it has been affecting my ability to identify my favorites quickly.
