Disgusting. Presumably the 70 remaining Republican House non-cowards are desperately hoping the Supreme Court throws it out before the end of the day.

You could make a fun Trump Projection Bingo Card, and one of its squares could be "Conspiracy Theory Clown Show," because he just RT'd this about a 2006 piece on CNN about election machines used in one of Hugo Chavez's Venezuelan elections.

Odd to do a Covid Surge in South Korea story with one number, the high new daily case number, 686, and no context. The U.S. has 210,000 new cases a day—48X South Korea per capita. They’ve had a total of 564 deaths vs 292,000 in the U.S.—80X per capita.

Opposition to "judicial activism" got going as a way for Republicans to slow down progress (especially on civil rights) without seeming awful. Here we are at the awful dead end of that process--a decadent GOP unabashedly demanding judicial activism to subvert a national election.

Here's what I mean, from his crazy 46-minute teleprompter rant last week – he deals with his inability to accept this election reality, his cognitive dissonance, by declaring it "statistically impossible."

A toxic Fantasyland parfait: delusion + ignorance + lies. SCOTUS has no basis for canceling the election and won't. And while 65% of the 𝘙𝘦𝘱𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯 third of people say it wasn't "free and fair," only around 10% of the rest of America think that.

. is a business overwhelmingly responsible for spreading pandemic misinformation that has harmed and killed tens of thousands of people. The 1st Amendment doesn't protect falsely, repeatedly announcing"NO FIRE!" in a burning theatre. Could a class action suit succeed?

Our covid death rate is now 2.4 Canada’s. So if the U.S. had done only as well as Canada at dealing with the pandemic, only 121,000 Americans would’ve died so far instead of 286,000. Thus Trump and his GOP are responsible for 165,000 unnecessary deaths. So far.

Good Georgia politics primer. And a striking fact I hadn’t seen before: in Atlanta and its suburbs, Trump got 67,000 more votes in 2020 than in 2016, but Biden won Georgia because he got *346,000* more votes in metro Atlanta than Clinton had.

Smart, interesting piece. A new way the GOP’s irrationalism could help do them in.

One reason he can’t handle the truth about the election: by increasing Republican turnout he got down-ballot Republicans elected, yet by simultaneously increasing Democratic turnout he caused his own defeat. And to Donald Trump, self-sacrifice is never heroic—it’s what chumps do.

Before this unanimous SCOTUS dismissal, “Trump and his Republican allies lost 50 challenges to the election in the past five weeks in at least eight states. Mr. Trump has not come close—even once—to overturning the results of a single state’s election.”

Arizona Republican governor’s chief of staff to a Arizona MAGA Republican member of Congress. I love this so much. More, please, everywhere.

I've been reading MAGA transcripts for a project. Like this, from a 2018 rally in Great Falls, Montana, for 7,000 people. Realized it's Joycean outsider art – un-self-consciously self-conscious, crude and tedious but weirdly riveting. A 2-minute sample of the hour and a quarter:

PERFECT: sincere young Trumpist jerk gets in on the grift by posing as a Trump. “I kind of thought he was like a clown at first. But the more I heard him talk, I realized: Yeah, he says kind of off-the-wall things, but I do agree with what he’s saying.”

As independently counted and approved in 50 states and thousands of counties by officials and judges of both parties, one candidate got 7 million more votes, 51% of the total. Yet the GOP establishment keeps indulging the conspiracy fantasies. I'm glad it continues to shock me.

There are apparently 938 George Washingtons in America, so we could find a health care worker over 65 named that to vaccinate first. Plan B: one of the 7 Americans named Jesus Christ.

Yes, the emperor is stark naked, with 90% of his court still praising the new clothes. But the GOP was becoming the reality-denying Fantasy Party decades ago. Trumpism is just the full flowering. See Part 5 of FANTASYLAND, especially chapter 40, “When the GOP Went off the Rails.”
