    The app is called “You’re Cancelled.” When you’ve made plans that you wish you could cancel, you go into the app and press a little button. If the other person presses theirs too, congratulations! Confetti exploded and your plans are cancelled.

    This is really right on. People running companies that make or plan to make podcasts need to focus on empowering producers and journalists to tell important and illuminating stories, rather than getting tempted by yet another celebrity interview or news wrap-up podcast etc.

    Just this week, MTV UK launched a new crop of podcasts (did they think we forgot the layoffs?). How many months until Buzzfeed does the same? Meanwhile The People Who Make The Things are treated like Ikea Lack side tables; cheap, abused, not an investment, not here forever.

    Making podcasts since 2009, I’ve found it slightly amusing that Leadership are getting excited now—treating podcasts like a get rich quick scheme ($600 podcast conferences) or youthful strategy (legacy media who simultaneously refuse overtime/contracts & love to bust unions)

    Big media startups came along and “disrupted” podcasting—indie creators became trampled underfoot, standard shifted toward expensive and labour-intensive podcasts—still free! Sorry Luminary—and rely on Hello Fresh conversion rates & the benevolence of Gatorade & TD Bank & Purina

    Spend money on print and digital spreads that pique interest. Buy vanity URLs. If legacy media and podcast upstarts keep depending on listenership to trend upward on its own, without manually helping it, they will unknowingly contribute to the bubble bursting.

    How to keep the podcast bubble aloft? It’s really, really simple. Build beautiful websites to convert non-podcast listeners to new audiences. Replace the churn. Stop building and producing ad nauseam without giving any thought to discovery or new audience development.

    You cannot promise a guaranteed number of downloads, or any kind of data granularity brands are used to. And eventually, a major brand will spend a fortune on a podcast made by a legacy media company & see limited ROI because of a crowded market and inadequate marketing. So??

    We are seeing marketing folks enter the space, eager to sell their clients on podcasts, but thin on ability to deliver promises — due to inexperience paired with the gamble of publishing any media. Companies are told podcasts provide intimacy, conversion, it’s all a shell game.

    The podcast bubble will pop. Within 4 years... approximately how long it’ll take before senior management starts actually listening to the shows their companies are paying for. Right now, podcast startups are making hay because the consumer market is fed stale selling points.

    i am occasionally asked about appearing on podcasts/working on podcasts I don't really do that stuff much anymore is easily one of the best podcast producers i've ever known and if you want a pro, she's the best you'll find
