You say "despite recent scrutiny of his civil rights record, and *of* slipping national poll numbers," but the good will in SC is not despite the *scrutiny* of slipping national poll numbers, but simply despite the numbers themselves. Strike "of" before slipping and it's correct.
Then focus on the future not defending the past. This campaign is awful. It’s a closing argument of a defense. Not an opening argument for the prosecution.
