“Instead of just banning things, we need solutions that consider everyone. We don’t have to choose between making the world more sustainable or making it more accessible. With a bit of creative thinking, we can achieve both.” - ⁦

How does affect racial and economic exclusion in our cities? Detroit-based architectural designer, , is pushing the conversation forward. It starts with the people and places that originally made a city great.

Tiffany Brown, standing in front of a chain link fence with a sign reading “road closed”. The fence encloses a huge empty field of concrete and overgrown grass that used to be the site of the housing project, Herman Gardens, where Tiffany was born and raised.

“When I say it’s you I like, I’m talking about that part of you that knows that life is far more than anything you can ever see, or hear, or touch. That deep part of you, that allows you to stand for those things, without which humankind cannot survive.”

The flexible straw is iconic . Made by a father and his young daughter Judith Friedman who was unable to drink through a straight paper straw. Today this invention is a necessary device for countless people with disabilities.

The original patent drawing for J. Friedman’s design of the first flexible straw. It shows a glass holding the straw, which is bent over the rim. And a detailed, close up illustration of the straw’s joint.

"The real problem is that cities considering restrictions simply aren't taking disabled voices into account. It's important to look clearly at a problem before jumping to a 'solution' that doesn't actually make sense."

I have friends who CANNOT drink/eat without plastic bendable straws at restaurants. -Their disabilities won't be apparent to you -Asking them to carry their own demands cognitive ability to remember, physical ability to maintain and clean it -Alternatives do not work 😡

How many people who want to ban plastic straws (and say that disabled people should carry reusable ones with them everywhere) remember to take their reusable coffee cup every single time they get a latte?
