We opted not to test our son for a genetic disorder, and our doctor agreed to treat as if he had it (no meds, just PT for now)...simply because we didn't want a pre-existing condition on his record. He now has insurance and can get the test.

I had a doctor who refused himself to write my diagnosis in my chart because he said I'd never get insurance. I HAD insurance, he was worried about the next 50 years of my life.

I still do it, even though I have excellent health insurance. Because ya' never know...

In the short time I’ve had full coverage, I still lie to my doctor for fear of the record being there and my insurance situation changing.

I’ve been avoiding the doctor for the last few years to keep diagnoses off my chart or show a need for ongoing care of any type

I consulted to health insurance IT execs. They had massive applications developed specifically to look for pre-existing condition evidence. Not just in medical records, but in epidemiology databases, state health department databases.

I still omit my family health history out of fear it might be used against me someday. Hey
@MilesHilarius do you know if insurers map out family connections and take that into consideration?

I got caught up with a surgery center that didn't get paid, but they paid the doctor. That's OK. Decades later, they had to pay over a quarter of a million dollars to keep me upright. Same insurance company. I got them. Thanks ACA!

I have patients ask the same thing on the mental health side. The system is beyond broken.
