Oakland: How are you? How's your family, your community, your wellbeing? Those are the most important questions right now. I'm sure many of you also have questions about what all this means for the planned launch of our Oakland newsroom. Some answers below:

Our commitment—and our initial funders’ commitment—to launching a community-oriented newsroom fully devoted to Oakland's information needs has not changed. Our timeline has changed, however. Oakland needs more reporting now, and we're mobilizing faster than expected.

We feel compelled to start reporting on this crisis's impact on Oakland now, nearly two months sooner than planned. We've joined forces with our colleagues at @berkeleyside, who have been producing stellar reporting on the coronavirus and the shutdown for weeks.

As part of this mission, I’m happy to share a bit of excellent news in challenging times: @DarwinBondGraha, a tenacious Oakland journalist who has covered some of the city’s most complex stories over the past decade, has joined our Oakland newsroom.
