google and facebook popularized "can we talk on background with quote approval" and now PR folks at agencies basically try to make this commonplace it becomes way easier when you do exactly this and create a policy — "sorry, i dont do quote approval!" and usually they cave

what really irks me is assuming you'll be okay with it. i showed up to a meeting once and they tried to set those terms right before it started. had to threaten to walk out the way the industry has grown too comfortable with coziness makes sense why they feel so whiplashed now

Kevin, I completely appreciate this. But there is a difference when you're the representative of the company taking the action. We're not trying to avoid accountability, but I want to reduce the risk for individuals on my team wherever we can.

While we're on this topic, can I ask a favor? Can we apply the "spokesperson name" rule equally? A couple of publications we work with apply it for tech, but it's not present when covering finance, gov't, etc. Happy to play ball but think it should be everyone.

on our desk, the rule is no blind quotes, even for spokespeople. I am not sure what goes on at other desks or pubs but agree there's a lack of clarity
