one more thought: ultimately a journalist's constituency is the reader. If someone says something to me that they won’t say to my reader, my job is generally to try to protect the reader and find a way to get that information to them.

google and facebook popularized "can we talk on background with quote approval" and now PR folks at agencies basically try to make this commonplace it becomes way easier when you do exactly this and create a policy — "sorry, i dont do quote approval!" and usually they cave

what really irks me is assuming you'll be okay with it. i showed up to a meeting once and they tried to set those terms right before it started. had to threaten to walk out the way the industry has grown too comfortable with coziness makes sense why they feel so whiplashed now
