I think it's just a size/$ issue. These companies are some of the largest financial machines in the history of capitalism. So they can actually afford the recommended safety equipment for their employees in a crisis. This being what it takes to get that in the US. :\

I have a good friend with a serious lung condition, and she had to carefully explain to me that smoke exposure like we saw here really could permanently damage your lungs.

I think that outside the context of a global pandemic, it's more of a "why not have that many masks" kind of thing. Fires are unfortunately gonna keep happening (nationalize PG&E) and the masks don't exipre, so buy a ton once & you're all good. Until, uhh, this happens.

it was similar short supply during those fires at my company too. i can only guess that once the masks became available again people in facilities and the like decided "let's make sure we have a stockpile for next time". i do wish they had given them to docs sooner tho.

Large companies, especially well-known B2C companies like FB and Apple are constantly preparing for all sorts of different disasters! It might be interesting to look into if you’re reporting on tech.

Not just B2C. Lots of companies do business continuity planning. Some corps have whole empty office buildings ready to go, complete with network setup they can switch over to, should their main building for example burn down.
