you’re right that should be the case. but given how far we currently are from universal healthcare, his statements seem cruel to me. Uber could follow the law and provide these benefits to drivers in CA today, but it’s withholding benefits as a bargaining chip instead.
The problem is that the social safety net and healthcare system in the US is tacked onto w2 employment. Trying to bloat that edifice further instead of fighting for universal healthcare just puts more power in the hands of big corporations.
I do imagine that, at the end of all this, we will see a lot of shifts made to the way we provide healthcare & benefits in the US. right now though, it seems like the priority needs to be getting resources into people's hands as fast as we can.
