Yesterday, we wrote about the lack of social safety net for gig economy workers during this crisis. Today, Uber's CEO said this to financial analysts: "This situation certainly demonstrates the downside of attaching basic protections to W2 employment."https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/18/technology/gig-economy-pandemic.html …
He argued that the spread of COVID-19 demonstrates why AB5, which reclassifies drivers as employees, should not exist and re-promoted Uber's "third way" of providing limited benefits to gig workers. Uber is backing a ballot measure to that effect this Nov.
"Having those workers having protections, that’s an important part of getting the economy back on its feet," Uber's CEO said. "Once everyone comes up for air and has a little room to breathe, we’re hoping to have that kind of conversation with governments."
Am I being too generous to think that he is actually right and that basic protections should be attached to being a citizen (if not simply a resident or person) and not to W2 employment?
you’re right that should be the case. but given how far we currently are from universal healthcare, his statements seem cruel to me. Uber could follow the law and provide these benefits to drivers in CA today, but it’s withholding benefits as a bargaining chip instead.

This is completely BS and he knows it.
Uber and Lyfts proposal is basically a sham that only offers about $5.64 an hour.
No one should be taking Dara seriously when it comes to speaking about worker rights.

As we have clearly seen in the tweets over the past few days. Drivers are often netting about $4 an hour right now. His statements are tone deaf during a crisis like this.

This situation certainly demonstrates the downside of a company refusing to provide basic protections to the workers upon whom they rely to generate billions of dollars.
