I feel it's a bit weird reading about "TGIF being dead" from Kate Conger, as (by livetweeting it) she did more to kill it than any other non-Googler, which isn't acknowledged in the piece. (She deleted those tweets sometime in the last couple months, according to Google cache.)

Part of the challenge as I understand is the Times's editorial policy that prevents it from acknowledging when it becomes part of the story rather than an external observer...
If that’s a NYT policy, I’m not aware of it. I acknowledged what happened at the time and talked extensively about it, publicly and privately. I think I was a convenient scapegoat, but our reporting shows the founders had already started to check out of TGIF.

The founders had checked out for sure, but the flow of information definitely suddenly dried up with the liveleaks.

Granted, it probably could have been any such provocation, and I'm sure the company was looking for an excuse, but it was... a very over the top thing that provided Google management with an excuse that many workers found believable at the time, and set back progress.
