one of the two (2) times I’ve cried at work since joining NYT was when I got in big trouble for talking to an exec on background. since then, I have offered to walk out of interviews rather than default to background, and... a lot of people say “ok fine” and go on record.

feels like magic! but also a big lesson for me in not accepting the weird secrecy that tech companies expect by default.

Helps to have a big bully pulpit from which to threaten, but yes... background is super weird and dumb in almost all cases.
