one of the two (2) times I’ve cried at work since joining NYT was when I got in big trouble for talking to an exec on background. since then, I have offered to walk out of interviews rather than default to background, and... a lot of people say “ok fine” and go on record.

Helps to have a big bully pulpit from which to threaten, but yes... background is super weird and dumb in almost all cases.

One strategy I like is “if you can’t provide me with an on record comment, we’re going to say you declined to comment on the record.” Weirdly simple but keeps them from copping out by offering already-public statements as a “response.”
