feels like magic! but also a big lesson for me in not accepting the weird secrecy that tech companies expect by default.

“I can’t take blanket background interviews with execs because I will get in trouble with my boss for wasting time. If there’s a specific question you want to take on background, let’s pause and discuss.”

What is "background"? Not familiar with the term (and it sounds maybe technical?
) -
it’s anonymity, usually given to sources who aren’t permitted to speak publicly (see: https://www.kevinroose.com/faq and https://www.cjr.org/opinion/tech-journalism-on-background.php …)

Why is it bad for you to get execs on background, does it make it harder to run the story? Is this a blanket rule (background vs on the record) or just with spokespeople?
-
Execs and spokespeople usually have permission to talk to me and often receive media training to do so. Doing those kinds of arranged interviews on background binds me from quoting them as I’d need to. I talk to lots of other folks on background/off record.
