specifically, about phones, not so much about this particular occurence of phone hackery. I'll elaborate (because I'm sure I'm not the only one!)

so someone wants to hack your phone. they decide their vector is SMS. so they send you an SMS with .. what? a malformed message? a malformed video that comporomises ... the sms message reader? does the phone's baseband process the sms message before that app does?

what im getting at is "if youre using a non-default app to handle incoming sms messages, are you still just as vulnerable?" - because many folks are using like, hangouts, or google duo, or signal or some other non-default sms app on their phones these days

so what im curious about is - are the attackers at the behest of the victims choice of sms app? or does it not matter at all because the hax attack the baseband 'meat' before the sms app ever matters?

oh that's an interesting question, and I don't know the answer. if reporters are the target, though, I feel like messaging platform might not matter much... a lot of us are on a ton of apps under the theory of meeting sources where they're comfortable.

this is exactly my quandry :D finding out what apps a person runs on their phone is a lot more homework than just blindly lobbing exploits at people expecting they use the default - but that only matters if the exploits target the app. HMMM :Dpic.twitter.com/DtWLeHudy3
