Hi! Elementary teacher here. We’ve learned how to pack a wound, properly barricade a door, best places to hide, best office supplies to throw at the shooter, and how to block our students from bullets. THIS IS NOT NORMAL.

Same here! Today we did our drill with Pre-K. You really haven’t lived until you get to find ways to make a lockdown (even just a drill) anything less than completely terrifying for FOUR YEAR OLDS

Yup. High school teacher here and same. We had a tourniquet training and practiced packing wounds. That’s what we do on our professional development days instead of pedagogy.

Serious question - Why is this a bad thing? Tourniquets and wound packing are first aid skills that can save lives. We teach people all sorts of first aid skills we hope they never have to use.

......because we’re not talking about it in a general first aid sense? We’re talking about it in the context of her job as a teacher. This is not a skill that should be normalized as part of teacher training, because students and teachers should NEVER live under constant threat.

How can it be right that this is an actual part of a teachers’ education? To learn how to give students the best chance of surviving being shot. At school. In a ‘first world’ country.
