A few months ago I got an evaluation that my email tone was “too aggressive” and “not nice enough” so I started adding in one smiley face and one exclamation mark to each email. It worked. No change in text or message. Just one smiley. Wild. :)

What if “cars” were smaller, lighter and autonomous? I’m very much for walkable, people-first cities. But this sort of catchy statement/binary thinking is dangerous. There are levels of nuance when it comes to mobility and removing cars alone won’t always solve cities.

Recently, I have become an “open office apologist”. Most open offices suck b/c companies cram as many people as possible. It doesn’t have to be that way! Allocating generous space to users and having neighborhoods of focus/collab open/closed options works!

“SMIC companies are reaping giant rewards for something that should be penalized: a failure, a delay.” Sounds eerily similar to how general contractors work. Maybe we have a problem on how we build complex infrastructure?

Agreed. A lot of AEC is like this too. So strange. With its repeatable units and reliance on design, it could foster some real interesting innovations in construction/prefab.

Friends, come join me! My lab is looking for great candidates to help research the future of AEC. It's really exciting work and a great, small team with lots of room to grow:
