In 2010, HU gov brought a new approach to governance characterized by a family-centered decision-making. With the strong pro-family focus, we were able to do a lot for HU families. In the coming days, I'll share some of our achievements of these 10 years.

Providing constitutional protection for the foetus: "Every human being shall have the right to life and human dignity; the life of the foetus shall be protected from the moment of conception." Most family benefits can be taken from the 91st day of pregnancy.

We built up one of the the most generous family benefit systems in the Western world. Central budget allocation for families more than doubled since 2010, it amounts to 4,6% of the total GDP in 2020.

We introduced a family-friendly tax system. Working Hungarians pay income tax based on the number of children. The more children you have, the less personal income tax you need to pay. Average income families with three children basically pay zero.

Since 1st of January 2020, Hungarian mothers with at least 4 children are exempt from paying personal income tax forever.

We help create balance between work and family. The number of daycare places increased by 150 percent; we allow grandparents to benefit from a grandparental leave, introduced the 'Women 40' program that provides early retirement option.

Interest of families are taken into account at most policy decisions. We set up the Strategic and Family Affairs Cabinet as an institutional framework.

We help families acquire homes. The amount of housing subsidy depends on the number of children. E.g. in case of at least 3 children, we offer couples a USD30.000 grant that they don't have to pay back& a USD45.000 loan at a guaranteed interest rate below 3%.

Year of Families. In 2018, a whole year was officially dedicated to promote family-friendly mentality and pro-family initiatives by organizing family events, creating media campaigns and introducing new measures.

Diminution of loans. Women with student loan are entitled to reduce their loans when the children arrive, they can also entirely write them off in case of a third child; mortgage loans are decreased at the birth of the second and further child.

We help young couples start a family. By introducing the Baby Expecting Subsidy, we provide a USD 30.000 interest-free, general purpose loan for young couples that we partially or totally write off when the children arrive.

Giving back the freedom of choice for women. HU women with children can stay home until the child turns 3, but also have the opportunity to return to the labour market when the child turns 6 months without losing the eligibility for family benefits.

The Hungarian family policy became an international reference point in many parts of the world from the US and Latin America to the Balkans.

We have encouraging results. Fertility rate up by more than 20%, number of divorces fallen to a six-decade low, marriages are at a 40-year peak, abortion numbers dropped by a third.
