This has been a decision a long time in the making (even prior to me coming to the AP.) I'm glad our newsroom leaders sought the expertise/opinion of staffers on this-- especially Black and other journalists of color-- to help inform the decision.

Sorry, but just because the folk at the AP have landed on a stylistic ruling, it doesn’t mean it should instantly be imposed on everybody by digital fiat. I’m sure the folks in those meetings are smart people, but there are still legitimate objections to this.
