The act of publishing something should of course be rigorous, but the barriers to entry are so high and/or corrupt that they whole circus can be dismissed. Who benefits? Company directors on the publishing side. I will let the academics speak for themselves or their side.

Publishing companies realise how they are viewed, and so chase inane woke practices refusing publication of content that flies in the face of these narratives. While at the same time removing content from access in regions such as China, where it may fly in the face of the regime

So you have a corrupt money grabbing industry based upon the missives of egomaniacal authors, editors and so on (frens excepted of course). The whole industry needs gutting. Barriers to knowledge are firmly entrenched on both sides of this chimera.

Academic publishing is a fascinating chimera. Within academia, the circus of peer review and citations drives what is published. Then, within academic publishing businesses you encounter the most venal and corrosive individuals imaginable.

For about 18 months now, I edit the lead journal in my field. Is small field OK? I am not celebrity scholar, I have not cracked hieroglyphics with help of rosetta stone. During pandemic some people disappeared/ retired, I took over.

This is academic publishing. Venality and malice in the higher echelons of every company, while they espouse cuddly DEI initiatives. Power rests on the shoulders of the most disappointing people imaginable, while staff across the industry are treated like inconvenient chattel.
