I'm looking for a free tool to host science catch-ups (a'la conference coffee break, where everyone can talk) for & open to the public. Has anyone tried to host something similar-how did it go? What tool did you use & were you happy with it?

I love it when scientists embrace both research & education, & try to make their work understandable to general public.

Hi! I’m a PhD candidate in counseling psych who studies Black women and the imposter syndrome. I created a space on IG for BW to submit their stories with managing the imposter syndrome (@black_and_woman_IG) to be posted anonymously. DM the IG account to be included!

I'd like to see more short & personal stories like this. It's helpful to have a peak behind the scenes, understand how the field was changing & possibly why.

Gender imbalance in neuroscience reference lists "is increasing with time despite greater diversity in the academy".

I'm really excited about and looking forward to being retired, and having all the time in the world to write papers 😉.

Increasingly intense degree programmes are not helping either. My PhD was 4yrs but minus 1yr of rotations, 3mth compulsory internship & no extra thesis writing time, it is 2+ years to produce ~3 papers worth of first author content (and teach) in a field you're newish to.

Honestly, being a junior researcher, I find it near impossible to do my lit rev properly & keep up with new papers. With the revival of the symbolic vs connectionist AI dispute, I'm trying to also go back to the original papers my senior colleagues refer to.

It would be wonderful if every paper was a carefully crafted brain-baby, rather then a product of pressure to publish regularily. Link to 's writing:

*REMINDER + PLS RT* Our workshop, From Neuroscience to Artificially Intelligent Systems (NAISys), has an abstract deadline of January 10. This Friday!!! But, it's only 1-page, so easy-peasy: Please send in ideas for how neuroscience can inform AI!

People who self-describe themselves as evangelists (data ev., ev. etc) sound very important indeed, but I want to know what they actually do. Signed, questions evangelist. PS I childishly like to imagine they go from door to door like Jehovah's witnesses.

Brains are amazing. Our lab demonstrates that single human layer 2/3 neurons can compute the XOR operation. Never seen before in any neuron in any other species. Out now in . Congrats Albert, Tim  & CO

In tiny news for the world, but big news for us, our second child arrived in 2019. I'm about to return to work after ten months' parental leave. This was quite tough, even though we're very lucky! Below, thoughts on supporting parents on leave. (1/11)

I'll need to rewatch some bits of the (it's after 2 am here) but a general thought for now: as a research community, we would benefit from clearer definitions that help to avoid strawmanning the other side of the argument.
